Without Humans

There was an article in the New Scientist today that I finally got around to reading. It talks about what would happen to Earth if humans disappeared. It’s one of those those things I think about every once in a while. I make no bones about being an environmentalist, but I also believe that commerce can exist in the environmental movement. I also don’t think you have to be some tree-hugging hippy type to be interesting in environmental issues. Even the evangelicals are coming around to the idea that, assuming you believe in god, it’s your duty to guard the environment. Yes, the Earth would be better off without us, but it’s time for people to realize you can do a few things at home and make a tremendous impact.

I Love Steven More Than Star Wars

I do like Star Wars though. A while back Steven Colbert challenged all the nerds out there to take some footage of him against a green screen waving a light saber. Entries were sent in and he announced the winner on his show last night with George Lucas. The winner was none other than ILM, the company that does the effects for Star Wars. I’d cry foul, but it’s funny. Take a look.

It Worked!

If you are reading this, it means DNS has propagated and you’re looking at the new and improved site. I decided to save a little money and move from TypePad to WordPress. I felt bad leaving the Six Apart family, especially considering I helped Mena and Ben test out the first version of MovableType way back in the day. I’ll still probably keep my Vox site to play around with, but there were so many cool things about WordPress I wanted to check it out. Anyway, the migration isn’t complete quite yet, but it was good enough to make available. Let me know how you like the new site. I’m going to do my best to keep the posts frequent, but I’ve said that more than a few times, haven’t I?

About

The name whatevernevermind was inspired by Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” There are a lot of bands that have had an impact on me and Nirvana is included in that list. Led Zeppelin, R.E.M., Elvis Costello, The Replacements, Sugar, Black Sabbath, Bob Marley, The Clash, The Who, Jane’s Addiction, My Morning Jacket and Miles Davis are all on that list too. I could go on and on, but that’s what the blog is for, right? You can email me at whatever [at] whatevernevermind [dot] com.

I'm Now A Fonero

I signed up to be a beta tester of the FON community. It essentially involves paying a minimal fee ($13) to get the FON router, setting it up and activating it. I received my equipment yesterday and immediately set it up. I had a little trouble figuring out how to set it up as there wasn’t much in the way of instructions. There was a quick start guide, but the CD-ROM was PC only. Good thing I have Parallels running on both Macs. Once I figured out how to bring up the web-based configuration, I made a few adjustments, connected it to the router in my office and registered the device with FON. The best part about the tiny router is that it has two SSIDs which allow me to keep the public FON access point away from our home network. I’m pretty sure I’m the only access point in Venice, CA right now.

Open and Closed At The Same Time

Dearest Lazyweb:

I have a fair amount of experience with networking, but I have a problem for which I need a solution. I have a broadband line coming in from the cable company. I would like to split the broadband connection into two distinct networks. One will be used for my girl’s business, which is run out of the house. The other will be used as an open network for anyone in the neighborhood to use (please spare me the warnings about having an open network).

As it stands now, I have a router in the girl’s office (192.168.0.1) with DHCP turned on and a router in my office (192.18.0.2) with DHCP turned off. It basically just acts as an access point. I’ve cabled the house, so there’s wiring between the two routers on opposite ends of the house. I also have an AirportExpress and a third router that I can use.

Thank you Lazyweb!

e4b Review

I don’t remember where I read about e4b, but I impulsively purchased one of their sampler cases. They arrived a few days later and I popped them in the refrigerator. The thought of sucking down warm fruit puree was not appealing. The flavors were Strawberry Banana (good), Mango (not so good), Pear Caramel (good, but sounds not good - they should come up with a different name), Kiwi (haven’t tried it yet) and Blueberry Raspberry (my favorite). The consistency is pretty smooth. You’re half expecting it to be more liquid, but it’s like a thick shake or smoothy. I joked with Audrey that it was like baby food for adults, which is probably pretty spot-on. They are very refreshing and not too sweet. I would definitely be more inclined to eat/drink one of these than slicing up some fruit. It’s a perfect way to eat fruit on the go. The packaging is cool, but I can’t help thinking about its impact on the environment, which probably isn’t so great. I wonder if there’s some way to recycle the containers. Maybe I’ll talk to the company and ask them about it.
